A patchwork of stones makes up the southern Temple Mount wall. Several broad steps (shown here) once provided pilgrims access to the Temple Mount’s two main entrances, the Triple Gate and the Double Gate, built by King Herod (37–4 B.C.) and now blocked off. Traces of the Double Gate remain above the left end of the top stair in this photo (compare with detail of Temple Mount wall).
