As author Murphy-O’Connor notes, the Via Dolorosa cannot be defined by geography. Pilgrims through the centuries sought contact with the places where Jesus lived, most especially those associated with his crucifixion. They found him not on the ancient streets of Jerusalem, but in their hearts. (compare with the Twelfth Station)
