“The sorrowful way.” Pilgrims carry crosses as they march on Good Friday along the Via Dolorosa, the devotional walk that long-standing Christian tradition associates with the route on which Jesus bore the cross to his crucifixion. The name Via Dolorosa means “The Sorrowful Way” and dates only to the 16th century, long after the events it is said to commemorate.
