Longhouse basilicas (as in the Hammath Tiberias synagogue, shown here) are characterized by a long nave with a Torah shrine on the Jerusalem-aligned wall. During the sixth century, apses with broad bemahs standing before them were sometimes added on the Jerusalem walls of longhouse basilicas.
