ON THE COVER: Moses and Aaron (left, wearing a breastplate) plead before Pharaoh to let their people go, one of a series of biblical subjects by Marc Chagall (1887–1985). Many times Moses and Aaron made their appeal and many times Pharaoh refused. Pharaoh’s folly led to a devastating series of plagues against Egypt, recorded in Exodus 7–12. Ziony Zevit, in “Three Ways to Look at the Ten Plagues,” examines several Possible meanings embedded in the story and argues that the plagues are a creation story in reverse.
