ON THE COVER: Jacob encounters Rachel at the well in this painting by the Scottish artist William Dyce (1806–1864). Though the biblical tale of Jacob and two wives is often understood as Jacob’s passion for Rachel and his disappointment with Leah, Samuel Dresner, in “Rachel and Leah—Sibling Tragedy or the Triumph of Piety and Compassion?” shows that later Jewish and Christian tradition viewed the sisters as exemplars of complementary types of piety.
