The Temple of Amun. Amenophis III (whose name means “[the god] Amun is pleased”) built the columns in the center of the photograph below as a temple to the chief god of the Egyptian pantheon, Amun. It was here, in Thebes, that Akhenaten was raised; Akhenaten succeeded his father in 1352 B.C.E., ruled from Thebes for five years and then moved his capital to Amarna (Akhetaten).
