TREADING GRAPES. To make wine, grapes were crushed in a winepress. After being pressed, usually by human feet, the grape juice separated from the pulp and flowed into a tank, where it fermented. A fifth-century C.E. mosaic floor from Beth-Shean shows men treading grapes in a winepress.
