RESURRECTION SARCOPHAGI. The Individual Resurrection Tradition, where Jesus rises alone, first appears on sarcophagi from the necropolis (“city of the dead”) at Arles, France. Sometimes called “Sarcophagi of the Resurrection,” these coffins date to 350–400 C.E. and depict the Resurrection in the center of their front panel. The partially preserved central scene shows a laurel wreath atop a cross with two figures below. It is housed in the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles.
