SAAR GANOR, ISRAEL ANTIQUITIES AUTHORITY

DESECRATED SANCTUM. Seen in this “Holy of Holies” are the two four-horned altars—and the outline of the horns that had been cut off—as well as the toilet that had been deposited in a niche in the room. The authors believe that the toilet was put into the room to desecrate the gate-shrine, similar to what happened at the shrine of Baal in Samaria: “Then they demolished the pillar of Baal, and destroyed the temple of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day” (2 Kings 10:27).
