THE SAMARITAN WOMAN. The earliest Christian depictions of the Samaritan woman always include Jesus, which is one way to differentiate between this Biblical scene (John 4:1–42) and that of the Annunciation, whose earliest representations also generally feature a woman at a water source. The late fourth-century ceiling mosaic from San Giovanni in Fonte, the ancient baptistery of the Naples Cathedral, portrays the Samaritan woman at the well with water drawers (to the right). Traces of Jesus can be seen on the left.
