FORTRESS FINDER. The famous British archaeologist Leonard Woolley codirected the first exploration of Kadesh-Barnea in 1914 on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund. He discovered the “rectangular fortress” on top of Tell el-Qudeirat from centuries after the time of the Exodus wanderings. Woolley would go on to lead the famous excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia, where he is pictured here.
