ON THE COVER: This defaced sixth-century C.E. floor mosaic of fishermen comes from a church at Horvat Beit Loya in Israel. Eighth-century iconoclasts vandalized human and animal images in churches and synagogues throughout the Byzantine empire. A church member repaired the Loya Church mosaic with colored tesserae but did not attempt to recreate the original image.
