The Damascus Document was found in the Cairo Genizah by Solomon Schechter, then of Cambridge University, in 1897. He identified it as a text written by Zadokites, a Jewish sect of the Second Temple period. Fragmentary copies of the same document were found half a century later among the scrolls from caves near the Dead Sea.
