ICONOCLASM. Beginning in the sixth century, it was no longer acceptable to depict figures in synagogues. A period of iconoclasm ensued, and mosaics and sculptures were purposefully damaged to remove any figural representations. Although portions of the zodiac mosaic at the Na‘aran synagogue survive, all of the zodiac figures were eradicated.
