TO ROME AND BACK? This relief from the Arch of Titus in Rome shows the menorah and other spoils from the Jerusalem Temple being carried in a triumphal procession to celebrate Titus’s conquest of Judea in the First Jewish Revolt (66–70 C.E.). Procopius relates that Justinian was able to return the Temple treasures to Jerusalem in the sixth century. He may have built the Nea Church as a kind of “New Temple” to house these treasures.
