STICKING OUT OF THE WALL. In a 1975 excavation just outside the southern Old City wall, archaeologist Meir Ben-Dov uncovered this corner of a building constructed of huge ashlars (each course is about 2.5–3 ft tall). The impressive corner sticking out was incorporated into the Old City wall during the Ottoman period. It is actually the southeast corner of the Nea Church, most of which remains inside the Old City wall.
