AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES. In March 2009 metal detectorist Terry Herbert hit pay dirt while exploring a farmer’s field in Staffordshire, England. He contacted the authorities, and the subsequent excavation revealed a hoard of more than 3,000 gold and silver pieces that have been made available to scholars for study, offering new insights into the Anglo-Saxon period. Might there be a lesson here for the treatment of antiquities and the looting problem in Israel?
