Zahi Hawass was secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities until being made minister of antiquities by Mubarak in late January. He resigned but was reappointed in March. Only nine days before the protests began in Egypt, BAR editor Hershel Shanks sat down with Hawass in his Cairo office to discuss how Egypt and its antiquities can illuminate Biblical archaeology.
