TANTALIZING HINTS. Elegant ashlars and the remains of a Doric frieze were found not far from the Monumental Building, in secondary use in a Byzantine church. Netzer wondered if the finely carved stones (such as this one with a rosette and triglyph) were originally from the mausoleum, but after several more years of digging, he determined that in fact they were from another building that Herod built as an elaborate entrance into his burial place.
