Bare-footed and hollow-eyed El, the father of the gods, appears as a bearded old man wrapped in a cloak sitting on a high-backed chair in this 10-inch-high, 13th-century B.C.E. limestone statue excavated at Ugarit in 1988. Remnants of bitumen indicate that eyes and arms were once attached to the figure.
