FROM AGE TO AGE. Tel Jezreel has been continually inhabited since the Biblical period. In addition to Byzantine remains elsewhere at the site, a beautiful Crusader church stands largely intact near the northwest corner of the tell (pictured in the foreground above). An Arab village called Zer’in was then established here. Because of its strategic importance, a massive fort or tower was built in the Ottoman period (the remains of which can be seen above the church at upper right), and the site was used as a central base during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence.
