Relatively little of the site has been excavated, but even this is enough to get a clear outline of what Jezreel looked like in the ninth century B.C.E. The rectangular enclosure is shown in lighter red. Excavated elements of the enclosure are shown in darker red. The enclosure was constructed of casemate walls with towers at the corners. Parts of two buildings (in blue) were discovered near the gate in the southern wall and by the northeast tower. The northern side of the site faced a steep slope into the Jezreel Valley, while a massive rampart and rock-cut moat (both in green) provided additional security on the other three sides.
