Perched atop the “Shoulder of Hinnom,” St. Andrew’s Scottish Church and Hospice (popularly known as “The Scottie” to its guests) overlooks sweeping vistas of the Hinnom Valley and the walls of the Old City. Throughout history, the hill’s commanding views over both Jerusalem and its southern approaches gave the site unusual strategic importance. The hilltop was occupied and reoccupied by successive generations of Jerusalemites from the Iron Age to the Ottoman period. Gabriel Barkay’s excavations can be seen along a narrow limestone outcropping adjacent to the modern church (seen in the shade diagonally across the center of the photo).
