National Geographic Society

The Gospel of Judas caused a media frenzy when the National Geographic Society first announced its existence to the public in 2006. According to the hype, this document, which is one of four texts contained in the so-called Codex Tchacos, included a sensational new interpretation of Judas as Jesus’ closest disciple and confidant. Many scholars have since taken issue with this reading, however, saying that the National Geographic scholars mistranslated and misunderstood crucial parts of the Gnostic text.
