Fourteen gold coins from the reign of the emperor Justinian I (527–565 C.E.) were found in a small ceramic juglet discovered in the southern wall of the synagogue, indicating that the building was in use at least as late as the sixth century. A probe beneath the basalt floor turned up more than 500 bronze coins from the fourth–sixth centuries, which confirmed this dating.
