A founding father of Israeli archaeology—and the grandfather of author Eilat Mazar—Benjamin Mazar is shown near the southern wall of the Temple Mount, an area he excavated extensively in the 1970s (the silver dome of the al-Aqsa mosque is visible above the wall). The elder Mazar, a former president of Hebrew University and a perceptive Bible scholar as well, encouraged his granddaughter’s efforts to locate David’s palace.
