The second most important city in Judah (after Jerusalem), Lachish occupies 18 acres atop a dominating mound in the foothills of the Judean highlands. The photo above is taken from the southwest, the city’s most vulnerable area. It was there that Sennacherib’s forces built a ramp from which to attack the city wall and where the inhabitants built a counter ramp from which to mount a defense.
