The second most important city in Judah (after Jerusalem), Lachish occupies 18 acres atop a dominating mound in the foothills of the Judean highlands. Sennacherib’s forces built a ramp from which to attack the city wall and where the inhabitants built a counter ramp from which to mount a defense. The ramp is marked on the plan, which also highlights other important features at the site.
