Tell el-‘Umeiri from the air. Identified with Abel-Keramim, a city mentioned in connection with Jephthah’s victory over the Ammonites Judges 11:33), this 11-acre mound has yielded important Ammonite structures and artifacts from the seventh through fifth centuries B.C.E. Four seasons of excavation at the site, located seven miles south of Amman, have also exposed houses and a street from the Early Bronze Age (c. 2500 B.C.E.), a massive fortification system from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1600 B.C.E.) and one of the best-preserved early Iron I cities (12th century B.C.E.) in Palestine. The forest at the top of the photo is the Amman National Park.
