The Qatzrin synagogue, once entirely buried except for the lintel on its entrance, seen in the background, is the best-preserved synagogue in Golan. The six basalt columns divide the prayer hall into a nave with two side aisles, the usual plan for synagogues in the lower Golan, with the entrance on the northern side. Measuring about 49 by 55 feet, the Qatzrin synagogue served its congregants from the mid-forth century to through mid-eighth centuries C.E. Recently concluded excavations have uncovered a portion of the ancient village adjoining the synagogue.
