Stone bamah, or raised platform from which the Law was read. The finely worked pilasters at the corners, with carved bases, originally were taller; they supported a stone roof over the wooden ark that housed the Torah scrolls. Over 3.5 feet high, this bamah was located on the southern wall of the synagogue, between the central and western doorways.
