The only evidence of what ancient historians indicate may have been a large and vital Jewish community is a stone lintel (see photograph) inscribed “Synagogue of the Hebrews” and this marble arch impost decorated with seven-branched menorot (candelabra) and other ritual objects—palm branches and citrons. The impost probably dates to the fifth century A.D.—well after the time of Paul.
