The only evidence of what ancient historians indicate may have been a large and vital Jewish community is this stone lintel inscribed “Synagogue of the Hebrews” and a marble arch impost (see photograph). The inscription, which is poorly executed, may date to the fourth century A.D.—well after the time of Paul.
