Surprising subjects appear in the stone art at Chorazin. One frieze fragment includes in the center a scene of young boys stamping on grapes, suggesting a Bacchic idyll. On another stone a Medusa is depicted. How are we to understand these pagan motifs at the site of a synagogue? The excavator suggests that they were purely decorative embellishments common at the time, devoid of their former pagan symbolic content. But who knows for sure?
