Proposed Positions of Jerusalem’s Ancient City Walls: The Second Wall is plotted on this map according to its position in Dan Bahat’s book, Carta’s Historical Atlas of Jerusalem. Bahat’s line is based in part on his belief that the Sukenik-Mayer wall is the Third Wall. Other scholars, such as E. M. Hamrick, who do not accept the Sukenik-Mayer wall as the Third Wall would place the northern line of the Second Wall further south. Based as it is largely on negative evidence, the precise line of the Second Wall therefore remains somewhat speculative. One point on which almost all scholars agree, however, is that Golgotha, now the site of the Holy Sepulchre Church, was outside the Second Wall at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion.
