ON THE COVER: The lands of the Bible have always held a special allure for tourists. To climb the pyramids, to ascend the Mount of Olives, to explore the tombs, tells and scenic wonders is as exciting today as it has been for centuries. Nearly 70 years ago, Eric Matson photographed Egyptian guides helping European visitors scale the Great Pyramid. Today, an Arab garbed in the traditional jalabiyah offers a tourist a camel ride on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives, where the visitor can enjoy a spectacular view of the Old City. A collection of other tourist photos—early and late—appears in “Traveling Companions—A Guide to Guidebooks.”
