ON THE COVER: Crucifixion by Georges Rouault. This print, “Sous un Jéesus en croix oublié là,” in aquatint and mixed methods, is one of 58 crucifixion scenes in a series entitled “Misere et Guerre,” completed by Rouault between 1922 and 1927. Although thousands died on the cross in Jesus’ time, archaeologists have discovered the remains of only one crucified man. In “Crucifixion—The Archaeological Evidence,” Vassilios Tzaferis reconstructs the final hours of a Jerusalemite crucified in the first century A.D.
