ON THE COVER: Appearing freshly written, these columns of Hebrew script are in fact the 2,100-year-old work of an Essene scribe writing on a parchment scroll. The Temple Scroll, 27 feet long and 8 inches high, was partially destroyed by moisture and insects, but large sections of it could be unrolled and read. In “The Temple Scroll,” Professor Yigael Yadin, who acquired the scroll for Israel in 1967, presents his interpretations of some of the scroll’s elaborate commands for building the Temple in Jerusalem.
