Lady Stanhope sets out for Ashkelon, near Palestine’s Mediterranean coast, in 1815, with Dr. Meryon to look for three million gold coins reputedly buried under a mosque. The gold, if discovered, was to go not to Lady Stanhope but to the Ottoman government, which ruled Palestine at that time.
