Ending abruptly at its southern edge in sandstone cliffs, the Tih Plateau stretches across the midsection of the Sinai peninsula. Virtually treeless, the plateau epitomizes the “great and terrible wilderness” described in Deuteronomy 8:15. But archaeologists were surprised to find cisterns, wells, potsherds and flint implements at what must have been seasonal camps here and there in this seemingly barren environment.
