An artist’s reconstruction shows how the Hammath Tiberias synagogue might have appeared in the early fourth century. As the worshipper entered through the main northern door, he would see mosaic “carpets” all around, but soon his eye would focus on the Ark mosaic and then on the two large menorahs flanking steps leading up to the real Ark of the Law.
