Diagonally laid layers of sod fill make up the counter ramp. Dumped in an orderly pattern, the fill contains pottery from earlier periods in Lachish’s history, ranging from the fourth millennium B.C. (Chalcolithic period) to the end of the 13th century B.C. (Late Bronze Age). Almost no pottery from the time of the Assyrian siege in 701 B.C. and none from later periods was found in these soil layers—evidence that this ramp was constructed at the time of Sennacherib’s assault on the city.
