ASOR Punic Project/Samuel Wolff

“To our lady, to Tanit … and to our lord, to Ba‘al Hammon, that which was vowed … ” reads the Punic inscription on this Tanit II stela. Above the inscription the ancient Carthaginian monument carver has chiseled the disk and crescent and the triangle topped with extended lines and a circle—symbols of the two deities for whom a vow was fulfilled with the sacrifice of a human life.
