Tanit in the sacred portal of her temple, holding a tambourine. This decorative motif appears on many sandstone monuments like this one, which dates to the Tanit II period in the Carthaginian Tophet. By the seventh century B.C., Tanit had become identified with the Canaanite goddess Astarte. Pottery figurines of Astarte holding a tambourine have been found in Palestine dating back to the time of Solomon.
