Toppled columns, benches and walls of the Chorazim synagogue overlook the Sea of Galilee on the distant horizon. The synagogue, dating from the third to sixth centuries A.D., like all the buildings in the town, was constructed entirely of local black basalt—some of it intricately carved. Somewhere within these synagogue walls stood the magnificent pilaster recently discovered by archaeologists as they explored the ruins of the surrounding village of Chorazim.
