Twin arches of the Golden Gate, one called the Gate of Mercy and the other the Gate of Repentance in ancient traditions, stand silent watch over a Moslem cemetery outside the eastern wall of Jerusalem’s Old City.

Just behind the crenelated wall is the paved platform of the Temple Mount on which—unseen to the left—stand the golden Dome of the Rock and the silver-domed Mosque of El Aksa. Beyond the Temple Mount, houses, shops, schools, mosques, synagogues and churches cling tightly to the dense network of streets in Jerusalem’s walled Old City.
