The entrance to the Cairo Genizah. A high opening reached by ladder on the end wall of the women’s gallery gave access to the dust-filled, windowless storeroom in the Ben Ezra synagogue. Risking his health in the suffocating Genizah air, Schechter gathered 30 large bags of manuscript text fragments and passed them out through the opening at the top of the picture.
