The Recovery of Jerusalem, Warren and Wilson

This cross-section of Wilson’s Arch, from The Recovery of Jerusalem by Warren and Wilson, illustrates the structure Wilson found beneath the rubble and fill of the Tyropoeon Valley. A large room excavated under the arch exposed 26 feet of the original 74-foot-height of the arch. At the 26-foot level, water covered the floor which, in the illustration, is identified as “the level of the pool.” On the right edge of the section, below the horizontal “pool” floor of this room, are the 14 courses of the western wall which Warren exposed in the shaft he dug down to bedrock. Today water no longer enters the room under Wilson’s Arch.
