The mysterious dishon (Hebrew, Deuteronomy 14:5) also called a pygarg in the Greek and King James versions of the Bible was probably a rare animal even in Biblical times. Today, zoologists believe the addax, whose broad cloven-hooves are particularly adapted to traveling on sand, is properly identified as the Biblical dishon. Specimens of this animal have been brought back to Israel from a New York State game park.
